FreeTeacher U provides special education licensure to individuals possessing a Bachelor's degree and previous experience working with students in the schools. It requires dedicated service for one full school year and is based entirely in practice. Apprentices will be assigned to a strong, pre-existing team of educators whose purpose it is to support struggling learners. The team must meet the following requirements: (1) it must meet at least every two weeks; (2) the team's work must involve planning around student data; (3) the team's work must address academic and/or behavioral concerns; (4) the team must include at least one special educator and one general educator. This team will guide the apprentice and provide formal coaching and informal mentoring.

Check out our graphic overview HERE. The Apprentice's primary role is to select, implement, and evaluate evidence-based interventions in six areas, including literacy, learning strategies, mathematics, and behavior/classroom management. Their work is supported by online materials and by their assigned team. The apprentice is also required to participate in 15 formal coaching sessions, one every 2-3 weeks, and to demonstrate how they have met each of the Council for Exceptional Children's (CEC) standards for initial licensure. Apprentices are responsible for providing data documenting their activities in each area (Strategic Intervention, Coaching sessions, CEC Standards) in a structured portfolio, which they defend formally at the end of the year.
